We sat down with Founder and CEO of Outdoor Afro, Rue Mapp, to discuss nature and skincare. Outdoor Afro is a national not-for-profit organization that celebrates and inspires Black connections and leadership in nature. We love and support Outdoor Afro, which reconnects Black people and Black communities to the nourishing benefits of outdoor education, recreation and conservation.
What was your path to founding Outdoor Afro?
I started Outdoor Afro in 2009 as a kitchen table blog inspired by a lifelong journey and experience in nature through family and community connections. I wanted to help shift the visual representation of who gets outside, and importantly, who can be a leader in the outdoors. It’s been a tremendous joy and honor to achieve these goals through my work.
Why is it so important for people to experience nature?
Nature is a platform for both connection and healing. I have found that when people are out in nature, they are able to experience community with the natural world and with one another. It is also vital for people to have a positive and lifelong connection to nature so that more people might care to steward and protect the natural resources with whom humans have an interdependent relationship.
Do you have a skincare routine? If so, what is it? When did you become attune to skincare?
I’m a huge believer in sunscreen and moisturizer. I moisturize daily after my evening shower from head to toe using products that support my dryer skin and even the planet, which is especially important as I age and spend a lot of time outdoors.
Which Jackfir product is your favorite and why?
The Jackfir Classic Daily Facial Cleanser is a huge hit with my husband right now. Not only was I excited to see that the majority of the ingredients are organic, it makes his skin feel and smell divine. We also have fun memories of time spent in the Adirondacks as a couple, so the product’s natural scent brings back a bit of lovely nostalgia for us as well.
